Gigantamax & Dynamax Battle Guide
1. Have a mix of attackers (1) and sustain pokemon (2) in your party. When in doubt about your sustain mon(s), choose a tank (with shielding capabilities).
2. During the main battle phase, the goal is to fill the max meter. Quick attacks and swiping to capture the energy bubbles that occasionally show up are the fastest ways to fill the max meters. Using charge moves also adds to the charge meter, but at a slower rate; don't use charge moves most of the time.
3. When three lines show up above your pokemon, that means it's time to dodge an incoming attack by swiping your pokemon left or right.
4. When the max-meter is full, your mini group of four will enter max phase. For a brief moment during the initial animation, you can swap to another pokemon, preferrably your attacker. But in some cases your tank (to shield) or healer. Generally, shielders are more useful than healers. Those who add shields during max phase will be targeted to the attacks mentioned in point 3. If a four persons can coordinate to be in the same pod, then assigning one trainer to shield and/or one trainer to heal will offer the best balance of damage vs. sustain/longevity. However, in largely attended gigantamax meetups, coordinating the exact four people into the same pod can be difficult; in a random pod, shielders offer the best results.
5. If you get fully knocked out in battle, cheering helps fill the max meter for remaining battlers.
6. In max phase during early battle: best to deploy your max moves asap. If you are the last few attackers remaining, it's sometimes beneficial to delay deployment of your max moves to give time for others to fill the max meter again.
Other key details:
* Gigantamax battles are considered Tier 6 battles and can accommodate up to 40 trainers at a time, but with the battlers subdivided (by the game) into pods of four that share their max-meter and max phases together and separately from the rest of the battle crew.
* Dynamax battles are Tier 1- 5 and can accommodate only four trainers at a time. This makes many T5 dynamax battles more difficult than some gigantamax battles.
